Theyyam dancer, Kerala. The lower castes of Kerala’s society normally participate in Theyyam, a folklore ritual in Kerala’s north as well as in bordering regions, and therefore all the stories and songs depict the cruelty of the caste system and the upper castes. Theyyam is the manifestation of God in an ordinary human being, so he or she is empowered with divine status.
The performers of Theyyam belong to the lower class community, and have an important position in Theyyam. People of these districts consider Theyyam itself as a God and they seek blessings from this Theyyam.
