Vishnu is considered the preserver of the universe. Some believe that he has been incarnated nine times, and will be reincarnated once more at the end of the world. Those who follow the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism regard him as the supreme god. He is often associated with light and the Sun. He is generally represented as a four-armed, blue-skinned human. His four arms hold the conch, the chakra, the lotus, and the mace. His consort is Lakshmi.

Shiva consumed the poison in an act to protect the universe - Drinking of this gross poison was a small matter for Shiva. In the 'Linga Purana' Shiva said there is still much poison in this world and those who could drink that poison are the real heroes. (note similarity to what Jesus did)
