An albumen print showing Dervishes in Egypt. The Mevlevi are a Sufi order founded in 1273 by the followers of Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi after his death. The centre of the order was at Konya in present day Turkey, where Rumi is buried. They are commonly known as the Whirling Dervishes due to their practice of whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of Allah). During the Ottoman period, the Mevlevi spread into in the Balkans, Syria and Egypt.

SULTAN MURAD V Sultan Murad V (21 September 1840 – 29 August 1904) was the 33rd Sultan of the Ottoman Empire who reigned from 30 May to 31 August 1876. Sultan Murad became the Sultan when his uncle Abdulaziz was deposed. He reigned for 93 days before being deposed on the grounds that he was supposedly mentally ill. He died at Çırağan Palace, Ortaköy, Constantinople, and was buried in Constantinople on 30 August 1904. His brother, Abdul Hamid II, ascended to the throne on 31 August 1876.
