HIV/AIDS Drug discovery and research In the treatment of HIV infection it has been compromised to some extent by rapid multidrug-resistant HIV strains, low bioavailability, and cumulative toxicities, and so there is a need for alternative strategies of #antiretroviral drug discovery and extra #therapeutic agents with novel action modes or targets. The identification of viral and cellular drug targets is necessary for fueling the drug development pipeline. Early #drug discovery efforts…

Gene editing approaches towards HIV Although conventional gene therapy approaches typically involve the addition of #anti-HIV genes to cells using semi-randomly integrating viral vectors, newer and genome editing technologies based on #engineered nucleases are now allowing more precise genetic modifications, the possible results of genome editing include gene disruption, which has been most notably applied to some of the co-receptor gene, or the introduction of small mutations or larger…

HIV and Malignancies People infected with HIV have a significantly higher risk of some types of cancer compared with uninfected people of the same age. Three of these cancers are known as "AIDS-defining malignancies" #Kaposi sarcoma, cervical cancer & non-Hodgkin lymphoma. A detection of any one of these cancers marks the point at which #HIV infection has progressed to AIDS. Most types of cancer begin when normal cells begin to modify and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor.

HIV among incarcerated people People who are incarcerated have a disproportionately high risk of HIV infection. Prisoners are at risk for infection with HIV because of the association of injection drug use with incarceration. They also tend to have risk components associated with under-utilization of #antiretroviral therapy such as substance abuse, mental illness, and poor access to care. For many inmates, the behaviours and situations that contributes to the HIV infection are those which…

HIV in women Since the start of the #worldwide HIV epidemic, in many regions, women have remained at a much higher risk of HIV infection than men. Young women and teenage girls in specifically, account for a disproportionate number of new HIV infections among young people living with HIV. Moreover, HIV remains the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age, yet access to #HIV testing and treatment remains low.

Pediatric AIDS In view of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection identified, the number of children infected with HIV has risen dramatically in developing countries.

Sexually transmitted diseases Frequently, #STDs can be present but cause no symptoms, specially in women (for example, chlamydia, genital herpes or gonorrhea). This can also occur in some men. Health problems and long-term effects from STDs tend to be more severe for women than for men. Some STDs can cause #pelvic infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease, which may cause a tubo-ovarian abscess.

STIs and cancer Some STDs are among those that can increase the risk for developing certain cancers: •	Chronic hepatitis B and #hepatitis C infections cause liver cancer. •	HIV patients are liable to several cancers including #Kaposi sarcoma, a cancer targeting the lining of blood vessels. •	Almost all #cervical cancers are caused by the (HPV), the same virus responsible for genital warts.

Sexually transmitted infections Sexually transmitted infections have been about for thousands of years, they are also known as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or #Venereal Diseases (VD) and these are the diseases that are passed on from one person to another through sexual contact, and rarely by genital contact - the infection can be passed via vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex, and there are more than 30 different #sexually transmissible bacteria, viruses and parasites.

Viral, bacterial, fungal and protozoans STDs Viral STDs #Viral STDs are caused by viruses passed from person-to-person and depending on the STD,can be transmitted during sexual activity, #Bacterial STIs are caused by bacteria drived from person-to-person during sexual activity. A vaginal yeast infection is a form of fungal infection caused by overgrowth of Candida, naturally occurring yeast.
