London, England, Crystal Palace North Tower. The Crystal Palace Exhibition was the brainchild of Prince Albert. It was opened by Queen Victoria on May 1, 1851. There were more than 6 million visitors by closing day October 11. Once closed, the buildings were dismantled, moved to south London, and re-erected in the suburb that now bears its name.
