Plunging Policemen, July 9, 1935 Three fully clothed members of the Port of London Authority Police jump into the West India Docks during the annual test of their life jackets. Originally each dock company provided their own police force, with the West India Dock Company employing 100 men for this purpose. When the PLA was formed in 1909, the police forces still in existence (from London & India, Surrey Commercial, and Millwall docks) combined to form the PLA Police Force.
Cupboard Shelter, December 1943 A day nursery in the East End of London shelters children in a linen cupboard during an air raid. Some homes had Morrison shelters – a steel table with wire mesh sides - where they took cover during raids whilst others put up Anderson shelters in their gardens. Regular practices were held and schoolchildren were drilled in the use of gas masks.
