Makar Sankranti marks the movement of the sun into the zodiac sign of Makara or Capricorn. It announces the end of winter and the arrival of spring. An auspicious and sacred day, it is called Pongal in Tamil Nadu, Uttarayan in Gujarat, Uzhavar Tirunal in Sri Lanka and Songkran in Thailand.  Makar Sankranti is mentioned in the Mahabharata as the day Bheeshma chooses to give up his life, as it is believed that one who dies on this day is released from the cycle of rebirth.  #MakarSankranti
