A Textile for Aldeburgh

I know I've told you before that one of my all time favourite places is Aldeburgh on the Suffolk coast. A mosaic of Aldeburgh loveliness! A few weeks ago I wanted to something textiley and I decided to try and reflect Aldeburgh. Not an actual representation, more of a memory of the light, the textures, the movement and the colours. I kept to a very limited colour palette, but used a variety of different fabrics and threads. I did some free motion embroidery, some hand embroidery, half hid…

the persistent thread - water - textile art

I love to make photo mosaics - in this one I am looking at textures and colours in a piece of work I stitched with a watery sea theme to make the fabrics look "watery" I used plastics and chiffons that reflect light, distressed the chiffons so they look like air bubbles and used different coloured layers for different depths of water. The frayed edges show water movement. I added seed stitches and fly stitches to resemble coral Carolyn Saxby - Mixed Media Textile Art

I just painted both sides to see which would turn out best. Lizzy's Learning Blog

This has been my favourite assignment so far and I'm pleased that I've finished it much quicker than the previous two. I think this is partly because I found it to be written in a more straightforward way and partly because I enjoyed the freedom of working experimentally. I liked just trying out techniques with no particular images in mind, then looking at the results to see what ideas it generated. I've found I've related the results to existing drawings and it's inspired ways to revive…
