Aquatint by Thomas & William Daniell. A shivalinga at the heart of this shrine is offered to the devotion of the faithful in this rock-cut temple, guarded by pairs of huge guardians placed along the entrances on the four sides. The flat ceiling is supported by fine partially carved columns, while the heap of destroyed rocks on the left of the image indicates a former natural access to the temple.

View of Benares
This is a watercolour view of Benares (Varanasi) by the topographical artist William Daniell (1769-1837). The Daniells visited the picturesque city twice, in 1788 and again in 1789, when this watercolour would have been worked on by William Daniell. It shows the Shivala Ghat on the western side of the city bathed in an evening light. This riverside palace was where the last Raja of Benares, had been kept imprisoned in 1781, on the command of Warren Hastings.
