Bahadur Shah II, last Mughal Emperor of India (1838-1857). Painted by August Schoefft in 1854. Shah II was the last Mughal emperor and a member of the Timurid Dynasty. After his involvement in the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the British tried and then exiled him from Delhi and sent him to Rangoon in then-British-controlled Desi.

Raziya the Sultan (ruled 1236-1240) in her own right for a mere 3 1/2 years after being named her father's heir, in place of her depraved brothers. Though Raziya had to fight her elder brother for the throne & later lost it to her younger brother, she was celebrated for treating her Hindu subjects fairly despite being a Muslim ruler; she was also a patron of the arts. Killed alongside her husband in battle, she remains the only woman to rule India in her own right, as sultan, not sultana.
