Walking Water (a Science and Art Experiment)

With three tumblers on the table, a measuring cup filled with water, paper towels, and food dye, I told my sons we were going to fill a cup with water without pouring a single drop in it. "HOW?!?" they said. "Let me show you!" This experiment is simple. It did require patience, though. We prepared our cups in the afternoon and then watched throughout the evening and overnight. How We Did It Fill two identical drinking cups 2/3rds full of water. Put an empty cup of the same size between them…

A View Through the Microscope

Microscopes. My students used to love microscope lab days. Who doesn't like seeing cool stuff like human skin cells, dog hair and pond scum magnified before their eyes? Before I let them loose with the expensive instruments, however, I make them learn the parts and what they do. That's where this came in handy... I love color-coded mapping activities. I think the process of identifying the part and coloring it can help our more visual and kinesthetic learners retain the information. I also…

How can you grow a potato plant without a seed?

This is the exact question we are attempting to answer right now in C107! We have set up our potatoes (cut about 1/4 off and soaking in plain water for a couple weeks) and have begun to observe, infer and predict about the growth we expect. Each student is keeping track of their information on one of these recording sheets. We will check back in a few days and again at the 2 week mark. We are anxiously awaiting the results! In the mean time, it makes a pretty cool display in the classroom…
