1590-95 N. India. The freethinking Mughal ruler Akbar commissioned illustrations to the Hindu text "Harivamsha" which narrates the early life of Krsna among the villagers of the Braj region. Here the young Krsna overcomes the serpent Kaliya in the Jummna river. Playing his flute, Krsna dances victoriously on the serpent’s heads. Gouache and gold on paper.
