Hornsea Pottery Studio Craft, 1960. Who needs colour?

Who needs colour? Not if you have shape and texture like this. I like how the shapes are nicely varied. There's a tall torpedo-shaped fluted vase, a Y-shaped jardiniere and a squat-shaped bowl. Two of the pots have a wonderful texture of carefully arranged raised dots or pimples (named as White Bud). The silky transparent glaze leaves only the colour of earthenware clay. These elegant and subtle vases are by Hornsea Pottery and they were designed by John Clappison. The name of the range is…

Hornsea Pottery Nostalgia Weekend

August Bank Holiday weekend was the Hornsea Pottery Nostalgia event up at Freeport. Following the one day success of last year's event, this year it ran for the 3 days. I set off bright and early on the Saturday morning, running with the theory the early bird catches the worm! For a long time I have had 2 main things on my Hornsea wish list, those being a cat cruet set and an Aphrodite vase, both John Clappison designs. My luck was in, a great selection of items were on display and I…

Potshots

Here are a couple of vases by Hornsea pottery that I've always found quite pleasing to the eye. The range is Westminster (I don't know why) and it was produced in 1960 or 1961. Hornsea seem to have perfected the technique of vertical grooving filled with colour, they used it on the beautiful Summit range, the Summertime range, and others. On this example the grooves are tapered and are very fine by the time they reach the bottom. As far as I know, there were only two sizes of Westminster…

Hornsea Edenfield 1964. Those cylinder vases just keep coming.

I mentioned a disproportionate affection with the cylinder vase in my last post. So you can't say that you weren't warned. Here we have another round, straight-sided beauty. This example is from 1964. The range is Edenfield by Hornsea Pottery. This understated yet elegant design features fine, incised, fluted grooves and pastel coloured bodies. One really nice aspect is the fact that the designer decided to colour the inside of the vases with strong contrasting colours – a nice touch. Here's…

Studio slipware pin dishes from the 1950s

I don't really have much need for a handy supply of pins but if I did, I'd keep them in a dish like this. These Stripe-tastic pin dishes were made between 1954 and 1957. Known as studio slipware the dishes were made by (you've guessed it) Hornsea Pottery. The flared black and white stripe design is hand-applied in coloured slip. The softly-curved rectangular dishes are nice, they stand on a base with four small feet. There's more Hornsea studio slipware on Potshots here: Studio slipware

More Hornsea Pottery from the Rainbow range. Again made between 1961 and this is a salt and pepper set. Ceramic Design, Ceramic Decor, Ceramic Pottery, Retro Kitchen Accessories, Hornsea Pottery, Kitchen Helper, Salt And Pepper Set, Mid Century Design, Vintage Ceramic

Hornsea Rainbow salt and peper set. 1960s

More Hornsea Pottery from the Rainbow range. Again made between 1961 and 1963, this is a salt and pepper set. I think there were five different shapes of Rainbow salt and pepper sets and I have a feeling that this shape was called Roulette. If I find any more of the shapes, I'll let you know.

Potshots

A simple but pleasing little serving dish or trinket tray by Soholm, Denmark. The dish is from the Blue Series, designed by Einar Johansen, It probably dates from the 1960s or early 1970s. The glaze contrasts are specially nice - a rich glossy dark blue with tones of earthy brown on the inside, the outer walls in a semi-matt black, almost leather-like, finish. The inner base of the dish is indented with a simple triangular repeat pattern. All of which, makes this item pleasing on the eye…

Hornsea Pottery slip-decorated fish dish from the 1950s

Caught one! Still trying to catch the other two. This small fish dish is from 1956. Made by Hornsea Pottery, it's decorated with a series of dots and trails of liquid slip in black, pale turquoise and pale yellow. It's from a set of three. There's also one with a black background and one with a blue background. I'm still trying to find the other two. As well as the fish dishes, Hornsea made a whole range of these small slip-decorated dishes in the mid to late 1950s. They come in a variety of…
