The picture is now on view following the reopening of Knole’s showrooms after a major conservation project.

19th century, selection of metal water cans.  Servants would relay cans of hot water for bathing to the family bedroom/dressing rooms.  Water would be drawn from the tap, kept warm throughout the day from the heat of the fire.  However, the Marchioness of Ailsa, was among the first to install a bath with shower hood, and walnut splashback.

'Conservation in action'- our visitors can see a colour sample section of a fire shelf in the Ante-room to the State Bedroom.  This allows our Conservation Team to determine the original colour scheme, enabling us to replicate how the Kennedy family would have seen their home.

William and Mary walnut oysterwood cabinet on a stand with luckenbooth symbol, and often described as the 'Douglas heart'.   Gained popularity during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots.  First sold from locked booths on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh, a luckenbooth was given as a token of love or betrothal.  This is the oldest piece of furniture at Culzean (17th century) and reflects the family's pride in their ancestor, Robert the Bruce.

Getting ready for the 2017 season.  Replica canons, made by the apprentices at Ailsa Ship Building, owned by the 3rd Marquis of Ailsa, undergoing cleaning as part of our closed season maintenance programme.  Thanks to our Collections Care and Housekeeping Team working hard keeping our collections maintained.
