LA 92, National Geographic - I remember exactly where I was when the worst, most costly civil disturbance in American history unfolded on my TV screen. (There's something to be said about being old, having lived through so much history.) This documentary, two hours, no commercials, is perhaps the most comprehensive retelling of the LA Riots ever produced. Starting with Watts. And continuing on with the militarization of the LAPD post-WWII and Chief Gates. Excellent chronicle.

It happened with Wilson, here. This fine doc pulls no punches. It will open your eyes to America's greatness, while simultaneously reminding us of its ongoing shame.

The Leftovers, HBO - I stuck with S1, through all its meandering, hopeless depression. I'm glad I did, because in S2, the writers rebooted the series, essentially starting over with a blank slate. What had been a dirge was now riveting, and at times, heartbreaking. WATCH: Matt Smith and Claire Foy in ‘The Crown’ | BBC America

The Crown, Netflix - Being a straight-up Anglophile, and a three-time visitor to UK, I couldn't wait to see The Crown, the most lavish and expensive television series ever produced. After watching S1, it's evident that all $130 million is up there on the screen. I suspect the famously private Queen can't be too peeved with her depiction; it's a sympathetic portrayal, a humanizing turn for one of the most recognized women in the world.

The Tunnel (2013), PBS - The difference between American procedural police dramas and European police dramas is that you must pay attention. Not to mention that ~50% of this excellent series in in French (closed caption mandatory). Watch this superior drama and be amazed by the acting, the writing, and the locales. Then look up the Eurotunnel and be amazed. Stay with it--the finale is heartbreaking.
