This figure vividly captures the moment when, with one long sleeve thrown back and the other trailing down, a dancer gently stoops and flexes her knees as she lifts one heel to advance her step, performing a dance described in Han dynasty poetry: “Their long sleeves, twirling and twisting,fill the hall;Gauze-stocking feet…taking mincing steps,Move with slow and easy gaitThey hover about long and continuous, as ifStopped in mid-air;Dazed, one thinks they are about to fall…”

Emperor Guangwu (13 January 5 BCE – 29 March 57 CE), born Liu Xiu, was an emperor of the Chinese Han Dynasty, restorer of the dynasty in 25 CE and thus founder of the Later Han or Eastern Han (the restored Han Dynasty). He ruled over parts of China at first, and through suppression and conquest of regional warlords, the whole of China was consolidated by the time of his death in 57 CE.

The First Chinese Empire: 255 B.C. to 220 A.D.

This comb was excavated in 1972 which belonged to Lady Dai (or 'Xin Zhui' (辛追) of the Western Han Dynasty who died around 50 years of age in 163 BC, and was buried in an immense tomb at Mawangdui in Changsha, with more than 1,000 items ranging from drink and food vessels, to silk clothing and tapestries, to figurines of musicians and mourners.
