After a successful career I am now gardening full time, have a Royal Horticultural Society certificate and last year opened my garden for charity after being approved through the National Garden Scheme.

A small deck around a tree trunk... could make a pleasant retreat, would be easier to maintain than a bench or chairs which the lawn people always mess up... maybe with some planters/raised beds around it to soften the look? .....if we ever get a home with random huge trees in the backyard, this would be a good idea.

"Our kitchen garden covers a small flat area and a rather steep embankment behind it. We terraced the slope and created the raised beds for the rotations. On top of the embankment we planted 15 blueberries from a number of varieties in a long raised bed. We use a crop rotation system in the majority of the beds. In the extra beds we plant seven year beans and over-wintering vegetables and all those plants that don't really fit the rotation cycle."
