The famous Memphis style derives from the 1980s design and architecture group founded by Ettore Sottsass in Milan, Italy. By challenging the ideals of that time and showing little interest in functionalism the Memphis design broke with a minimalist design period which seemed to lack personality and individualism. The Memphis Group designed brightly coloured and wildly patterned Postmodern furniture, fabrics, ceramics, glass and metal objects which happened to be groundbreaking.
