setup scene for a local postcard

St. Ives, Cornwall by saffron100_uk, via Flickr

St. Ives, Cornwall

This was taken in "Pudding Bag Lane" (Capel Court). The area was demolished (to the everlasting shame of the town council) in 1936 to make way for a car park. There was much anger at the time, but the authorities in the name of "slum clearance" called in the bulldozers anyway. Newlyn (and Mousehole) would have suffered a similar fate if WWII had not intervened. In the view of local historian Cyril Noall, in an article the St Ives Times and Echo, June 25 1982, the Town Council helped to…

The Wharfe St Ives Cornwall c1915 Antique Sepia Black and

A beautiful photographic postcard so evocative of the historic fishing village of St Ives at the start if the last century. Dating per the postmark to 1915, the photo may be a little earlier. A wonderful portrait of the fishermen with their lobster pot and the bystanders looking at the novelty of the camera. The close ups (photos 1 and 4) of the postcard reveal surprising detail of faces, costumes and buildings. The card was published by Valentines, printed in Great Britain, and measures…

St. Ives, Cornwall

Another view of the activity around the slipway, with the barrels awaiting their turn to be packed with fish and then transported away on waiting carts. The building on the left with the barber's pole would later become the celebrated Hart's Ice Cream Parlour, sadly no longer in business but remembered fondly by visitors to the town.

ALFRED WALLIS' HOUSE | St Ives, Cornwall: 'The lady in the picture is Mrs Wallis. The view from the front porch would have been of all the boats drawn up on the sand in the harbour.' 'He first married a woman much older than himself, he moved from Penzance to St Ives and lived in a house on the wharf. From there he carried on the trade of a dealer in marine supplies. He was charged a couple of times for receiving stolen goods.' ✫ღ⊰n

St. Ives, Cornwall - A view looking down Barnoon Hill toward the town. The entrance to Ayr Lane can be seen on the right. Barbara Hepworth's studio former home now occupies the house on the corner. The building behind the steps on the left later became the site of a cinema (Palais de Danse) and then was subsequently used as a studio by Barbara Hepworth in the 1960's.

St. Ives, Cornwall - A view of the entrance to Fore Steet. Devoid of cars, but even then the street was narrow enough to cause congestion with horse drawn transport. From the costume it would appear to have been taken in the Edwardian era or just before WWI.

St. Ives, Cornwall

A view of the entrance to Fore Steet. Devoid of cars, but even then the street was narrow enough to cause congestion with horse drawn transport. Many of the buildings remain unchanged apart from the shop fronts and several of the business names are still very familiar to the townspeople. One can just see a sign for "Eastman" - (Eastman Kodak). I think this is probably just outside 'Leddra the Chemist' - a business which still survives in its original location. From the costume it would…
