When his father, Ernst died, in 1970, Lucy had attempted suicide. After this, she was no longer the sparkling, bright person she'd been, she became a shadow. In this condition, Lucian could tolerate his mother. He looked after her, but never flinched from expressing the fraught conditions of their relationship.
