Edith Cavell c1900. In 1907 she was approached by a Belgian doctor to open and supervise a School for Nursing in Brussels. In 1915 she was arrested and subsequently court -martialled and sentenced to death for helping allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium.

1916. A propaganda cartoon by T. Carnel depicting the execution of Miss Edith Cavell, lying on the ground, having been shot by a German soldier, as other German soldiers look on in the background. Miss Cavell, a British nurse in Brussels, was accused of being a spy by the Germans and was executed on 12 October 1915. The top right hand corner reads "Miss Edith Cavell cowardly murdered October 12th 1915".
