Tip: For painting atmospheric perspective, first consider the nature of the surrounding atmosphere and environment. As objects get further away, lean the colors in the direction of the atmosphere. You can also vary how rapidly this gradation occurs to suggest different environments. To convey a hazy and overcast landscape, you should show a more rapid color gradation than if you were painting the same landscape on a clear, sunny day.

Drawing Tips with Dan Scott
For this painting, the first thing I did was carefully draw Elora and the other key shapes and objects. I don’t always go this detailed. Usually, I just do a loose sketch. But because this is a more complex subject, I spent a bit more time on the drawing. I also have less room for mistakes as it’s my daughter. If I make mistakes, I’ll notice. And if for some reason I don’t, my wife surely will. Painting: Dan Scott, Elora with Christmas Lights, 2024.
Painting Tips with Dan Scott
Here, I’m using a paper towel to gently blend the paint and soften these background colors. The paper towel also lifts paint from the surface, keeping this initial layer of paint thin and adaptable. I find that as paint starts to build up on the surface, my strokes become less responsive, so I like to keep the paint thin in these early stages.
