The ruined Elizabethan mansion was built partly from bricks from the old Abbey buildings at St Albans, originally taken from the nearby ruins of Roman Verulanium. The house was once the residence of Sir Francis Bacon.

View of Baxendale Street, Tower Hamlets, looking east to Durant Street. Terrace houses can be seen on both sides, and a 'Garages to let' sign can be seen on the left. At the bottom of the road cars are parked and people are walking on the pavement. After the photograph was taken, a house was built on the site on the left hand side, where a fence can be seen.
