Ellen Cicely Wilkinson - one of the first women to be elected to parliament in 1924. Known as Red Ellen for her red hair & her political convictions she became MP for Jarrow in 1935. In 1936 she organised the Jarrow March - 200 unemployed workers walked from Jarrow to London to present parliament with a petition for jobs. When they arrived, very little was done. The town's shipbuilding industry remained closed, and the marchers given £1 each for the train fare back to London!
