My first attempt at daffodils this year. Three bloomed before it got cold and snowy. My neighbor, who is a summer resident, has dozens blooming in her yard. As I am every year, I'm terribly tempted to go and take a few! She's not here to enjoy them, I reason, why would she mind? But I can't bring myself to do it, never have. (9x14) With (left and above) and without (right) pencil.
After a career in teaching in higher education, in 2005 I had the time to pursue a long-held ambition to paint botanical subjects. I attended many residential courses and eventually found a local tutor who gave excellent tuition and motivation. My interest in alpine plants particularly was inspired by my father who was a Chelsea Flower Show gold-medalist for his show gardens in the 1940s and who had worked at and eventually managed, the famous Six Hills Nurseries in Stevenage, Hertfordshire…
OK so it hasn't stopped raining for months and the garden is a muddy mess, but in my imagination the daffodils will come out sometime soon (they may have developed webbed petals by the time they do). 30x40cm watercolour on paper.
