The girl had killed two  Germans in the Paris fighting (on August 16th 1944) and also had assisted  in capturing 25 German POWs during the fall of Chartres. Otto Carius (1922-2015) was a German tank ace of the 502nd Heavy Panzer Battalion, who was credited with destroying more than 150 tanks (ca. July 1944). He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. After the war, he studied pharmacy at Heidelberg University. In 1956, he started his own pharmacy shop in Herschweiler-Pettersheim called Tiger Apothekein, which he ran until 2011. It was named for the Tiger tank. Ace, Famous, Otto Carius, Luftwaffe

There is a lot of discussion about persecution by Czechs and Poles etc. Simply they were fed up with German domination and brutality and yearned to be free from totalitarianism. It was the largest movement of refugess in Europe ever recorded.
