Paul Gauguin's 1893 work "Tehamana Has Many Ancestors" from Gauguin's first journey to Tahiti. He was disappointed that the primitive paradise he sought was being suffused by Western colonial forces. He painted Tehamana (who became his companion) in the modest "Mother Hubbard" dress that was imposed on Tahitian women by missionaries.
