Black Narcissus (1947) won the academy award for best cinematography. Jack Cardiff used lighting and angles to create his shots for the film. He also used a muted colour palette to great effect.
Jeff Cronenweth (The Social Network/Fight Club) uses many dark, earthy tones in his cinematography works. Very visually striking, although difficult to watch in the wrong environment (eg. out of the cinema)
