An hour’s drive from Yogyakarta, Borobudur sat relatively undisturbed for a millennium, until 1814, when Sir Stamford Raffles, the British lieutenant governor of Java, heard rumors of an ancient temple buried beneath volcanic ash and overgrown jungle.
