Adventures of an Art Teacher
"We do not teach the arts to create great artists anymore than we teach math to create the next generation of mathematicians or language arts to create the next generation of writers. We teach the arts in our schools to create great people so they are empowered with skills and knowledge to be successful in life… to do great things regardless of the vocational pathway they choose." Steve Jobs Enough said.
Building materials. Here you have a great combination of natural wood blocks and loose parts from the environment with just the right amount of variety and quantity so as not to overwhelm and still encourage sharing and collaboration without limiting creativity and innovation.
I use these photo blocks in our block center. I take a full body shot and cut it out and then just tape it to a block. the kids love using them both in the block center and for other games they invent.
An example of how to expand block play with art media and loose parts to encourage pretend play and representation of ideas based on the unique interests of the child. Reggio inspired.
