China exported exquisite silks that were hand-painted with designs of flowers, birds and insects in realistic and fantastical colors and designs made especially for the Western market. The polonaise gown came into fashion in the 1770s. This ensemble took over 400 hours to paint, and over twelve yards of silk fabric.
