It was authorized by the FCC, Federal Communications Commission, and declared a “national standard” in October of 1950 even though there were some problems with the early designs. While these new television sets were bulky and were not compatible with the earlier black & white sets, CBS began public broadcasting in 1951 on the East Coast.
