Usually when we talk about bugs or insects, we imagine something repulsive and gross, and even scary. Probably more than one of you even has a phobia and can’t stand those little critters. The Atlas Beetle (Chalcosoma atlas) is a very large species of beetle in the family Scarabaeidae, found in Southeast Asia. Males have three prominent horns. The species is named for Atlas, the giant of Greek mythology who supported the skies.

ABOUT THE ARTWORK Drawn to organic forms my inspiration comes from nature. As a child I was mesmerized by butterflies and ladybugs, and I liked to observe ants and fuzzy caterpillars. At the same time I was fearful of insects that moved too quickly or might sting. Once I started painting them, though, my fear of certain insects turned into an appreciation of their important ecological role, and to this day insects of all kinds are one of my favorite subjects.
