Maker and Muse at the Driehaus Museum in Chicago explores the role of women in jewelry design from the late Victorian era to the early 20th century.

Maison Vever | An Art Nouveau Gold, plique-à-jour enamel and diamond pendant, circa 1908. Illustrated in La Bijouterie Française Au Xixe Siècle, page 687, described as a “pendant in the form of wood sorrel, decorated with plique-à-jour enamel.” Signed and numbered.

Art Nouveau celebrated themes of nature and the feminine form, a revolt against the industrial age and its classical, formulaic designs. Hand craftsmanship and naturalism were championed over precious materials and overt displays of wealth.
