The “normal” pain scale does not work for those with a chronic illness or chronic pain, since most of us, at baseline, have some sort of pain or discomfort. When asked “on a scale of 1-10, what is your pain”, we often get weird looks when we say anything above 5, and when we try to explain what we mean, they are skeptical. Pain-fear cycle 
With chronic pain, our brains become stuck not only in a chronic pain cycle but in a pain-fear cycle. Pain fuels fear and fear fuels pain.
