Compare and Contrast Map of Genetic Information Flow Between Humans and Bacteria
Genetic information is a vital part of existence. It dictates an organism's traits and it gets passed to the next generation. But what are the differences and similarities between the genetic information flow between humans and bacteria? How similar are we with our microscopic co-inhabitants? Check out this compare and contrast map to see 🧬✨
Biology - Genetic Mutations
In General Biology, we've been learning genetics! We've studied both gene and chromosomal mutations. In this project, students could create their own mutations following a specific set of criteria. Level 2 student, Daphne, created such a colorful and easy to follow chart for her substitution, insertion, and deletion mutations! I love watching students not only grasp difficult concepts, but truly understand them and be able to manipulate those concepts on their own!
Chromosome Structure Diagram
This picture shows the organization of chromatin including DNA's double helix structure and how DNA winds around core particles to form nucleosomes. From there, the DNA continues to wind upon its self until a chromosome is created. The function of genes in DNA is to code for the creation of proteins to be used in the body. A genome is all the genes one person has. For example, the human genome is approx. 30-35,000 genes. (Picture obtained from McGraw-Hill Connect).
Genetic Distance Chart
Chromosome 17 is just one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that makeup the human body. It spans more than 83 million base pairs (the building material of DNA) and represents between 2.5 and 3% of the total DNA in all cells. NF1 is a microdeletion syndrome caused by the mutation of a gene located on chromosomal segment 17q11.2.
