A covalent bonding is the mutual sharing of one or more pairs of electrons between two atoms. Ionic bonding is the bonding of oppositely charged ions in a chemical compound. A metallic bonding is the chemical bonding of two or more metal atoms.

Covalent bonds are chemical bonds between two non-metal atoms. An example is water, where hydrogen (H) and oxygen (O) bond together to make (H2O). As they are both non-metals—which need to gain electrons—they have to share, so their outer shells cross over in order to have a full outer shell. A full outer shell has eight electrons. The electrons in this outer shell are called valence electrons.

An example of covalent bonding between hydrogen and chlorine. Instead of needing eight valence electrons to gain a full shell, hydrogen only needs two, making it possible for these elements to make a compound.
