Alfred Oscar Coffin Alfred Oscar Coffin, the first African American to earn a Ph. D. in the biological sciences, was born on May 14, 1861 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, the son of Samuel and Josephine Maria (Drake) Coffin. Coffin earned his bachelor’s degree from Fisk University in 1885 and his Ph. D. in biology from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1889.
