Pork gravy is poured over it to give the same look as what is pictured on the Alpo cans, which are placed nearby to give the illusion that what is in the bowl came from the cans.  Many of my guests were so repulsed by this that they could not bring themselves to eat it.  It was a Freaky Food Prize Winner.
