The Martin PBM Mariner was an American patrol bomber flying boat of World War II and the early Cold War era. It was designed to complement the Consolidated PBY Catalina and PB2Y Coronado in service. A total of 1,366 PBMs were built, with the first example flying on 18 February 1939 and the type entering service in September 1940, with the last of the type being retired in 1964.
An F-4 "Phantom" supersonic fighter aircraft is landing on the flight deck of the USS Forrestal. The F-4's tailhook has just caught one of the cables across the deck. You can see it just behind the word "Navy." The beginning of sudden deceleration has lifted the front landing wheel off the deck. A fortunate shot at just the right moment. The Forrestal was in the Atlantic Ocean, near Jacksonville, Florida.
