In this upstate New York kitchen, Amy Lau sought to emphasize the room’s natural light and backdrop of dense foliage. The Danish Modern bar stools are by Eric Buck and the 1960s ice bucket is Jean Quistgaard for Dansk Designs Denmark. The mid-century Scandinavian glassware and ceramics are from the owner’s personal collection.

A large sliding window set into the end wall of this extension is enclosed within a wooden frame that provides a space for internal and external seating.

The expansive new kitchen has a generous sliding glass door to the yard and cabinetry is outfitted in plain-sawn walnut. "The wood is close in tone to the existing mahogany woodwork, but it has a more expressive grain," says Chadbourne. "We used it at all new cabinetry in flat, flush panels.

A growing family needed a larger kitchen and wanted a family room that opened up the garden - there was, however, a large tree that sat directly next to the existing kitchen. It was loved by the family, they have enjoyed sitting under it in the summer, watching the seasons change against it but it was threateningly close to the house and blocking the light and views out.
