It was a 12-lane expressway not long ago; now, the southern shore of Lake Merritt is the perfect place for a picnic or a stroll. The recently completed Lake Merritt Boulevard, just a few blocks from the headquarters of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) and the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG), serves as the newest symbol of the ongoing transformation of the “jewel of Oakland."

The Holcim Awards 2023 acknowledgement prize for Latin America went to Memories of Water designed by TAP Arquitectura, Rojas Arquitectos, Geográfica Taller, Sur-Estudio de paisaje y Arquitectura, Cosme Landscape Architecture, EMS Arquitectos. An amphibious park system located on a floodplain that seeks to reinvigorate its territory with habitat revitalization strategies that reconcile and strengthen the living dynamic of the natural and urban landscape.

The "boat room" concept is rooted in a local tradition of #boat living by the "nine fishing families" from the Ming to Qing dynasties. Nestled among trees, the five rooms gracefully float two-thirds above the lake, reflecting the historical water tribe culture.
