The appendicular skeleton consists of the upper and lower limbs and the axial skeleton consists of the head, neck (cervical region), and trunk. The trunk is further divided into the thoracic region and abdominal region. The thoracic region refers to above the diaphragm while the abdominal region refers to below the diaphragm.

The skeleton is broken into two regions. The axial skeleton, which is marked in blues, forms the central supporting axis of the boyd. It includes the skull, auditory ossicles, hyoid bone, vertebral column, and thoracic cage (ribs and sternum). The appendicular skeleton includes the bones of the upper limb and pectoral girdle and the bones of the lower limb and pelvic girdle.
