Contrary to Wikipedia, the line drawing to the left (from the archives of company Scott Foresman and Company) is NOT a hairstyle worn by Mme de Pompadour. As you can see from the paintings and bust of Mme de Pompadour, she wore her hair close to her head, without any upsweep to the front, and mostly braids not curls, also close to her head.
