Hedge clippers came in a variety of shapes and sizes. The hand-forged iron blades could be wide or thin, long or short. Because of their weight, they required considerable strength on the part of the gardeners, who worked all day long, sometimes in acrobatic positions. The local blacksmiths who forged these sharp tools found it difficult to make the handles and blades proportionate, which explains the haphazard, rather ungainly look of some of the clippers.
