Before the medieval chapel was knocked down to make way for the new Victorian chapel, poor students at Saint John's College lived in what was called "The Labyrinth," or what had once been the infirmary of the Medieval Hospital. One suite of rooms in particular was called "Iniquity," perhaps because the rooms were situated over the organ and choir area of the chapel, making it an especially noisy place to live!
POBLET MONASTERY, Spain: was founded by Cistercian monks from France on land taken from the Moors. In addition, the walls are an excellent example of 14th-century military architecture: crenellated battlements with walls 2 m thick and walkways, reinforced with high towers that are either square or polygonal, with a Royal Gate defended by machicolations.
The Collegium Maius in Cracow is one of the few medieval university buildings in Europe. It was built by Johann the Mason in 1492-97. The wings are grouped around a courtyard, the main features of which are an arcade placed forward of the wall to accommodate the upper-level walkway, over which looms a roof over-hang of the same width as the walkway.
