Rhett Butler (b. 1828) is a fictional character in the 1936 novel Gone with the Wind. Rhett's personality is that of a cynical, charming, and mocking philanderer. He is obviously very well-educated, referencing everything from Shakespeare, to classical history, to German philosophy. His understanding of human nature extends to children as well, and he is a much better parent to Scarlett's children from her previous marriages than she is herself.
