💯Treating rib pain can feel very frustrating at times because this condition is often self-limiting. We need to recognize that one of the best things we can do when helping to treat and manage this condition is to educate, so let’s chat about it!

👉First and foremost, let’s help empower our patients in the fact that they are not fragile and that their rib likely isn’t “popped out” or “out of place” unless they have been involved in some sort of trauma resulting in a true dislocation of this joint. It’s our duty to provide the correct information to our patients and educate them on what is truly going on at the joint, which, as long as they haven’t been involved in trauma to the area, is likely just irritation of the joint capsule where t Rib Pain, Thoracic Spine, Survival Guide, Baby Carrier, Daily Activities, Assessment, We Need, Conditioner, Good Things

The primary reason for slipping of ribs is weakness of ligaments which support the ribs to stay in place. Without the support of muscles the weakened ligaments probably make it easier for the ribs to slide. As the ribs slide along with it the loose ligaments also get stretched producing pain in lower chest and upper abdominal area. As a physical therapist I often see this associated with a tightness and restriction of mobility in the lower ribcage.

The reason for the connection between these two symptoms is due to our body’s need to breathe over 22,000 times a day, and if we lack the ability to expand in our lower ribs we will find another way to pull air into our lungs to survive. 🫁

This often ends up being in the upper ribcage resulting in a lot of muscle activity in our upper traps, and neck musculature.

In this exercise we are focusing on expanding through our lower ribcage while also retraining how to allow the ribs to return from an expanded position to a neutral position.
