Sacred texts are incredibly important to followers of religion. They guide the followers how to live and act and serve as records of religious history.

The Vedas are the sacred scriptures of Hinduism and are regarded as the oldest religious texts in the world. Thought to have been composed at least 3,500 years ago, the Vedas are a collection of hymns, magical incantations, dramatic mythological accounts, and sacred formulas for enlightenment.

For most of us, sushi is synonymous with Japan. But did you know sushi is also associated with the word 'shari', which in turn arises from the Sanskrit word 'zaali' meaning rice!

I shot this traditional Tibetan sacred text at the Tendong Lho Rum Faat, a festival celebrating the Lepcha culture in the town of Gyalshing in west Sikkim," says photographer Steve Winter. "Participants told me the text was over 200 years old and contains prayers of the Lepcha people." The Lepcha are the aboriginal inhabitants of Sikkim, with their own language and script.
