four different pictures of colorful fish in the ocean with bubbles and bubbles on their faces

My last rotation of classes had to take a little hiatus on the art projects we've been working on (and so very close to finishing) to help the PTA and classroom teachers out with an Original Works project. If you don't know what Original Works is check it out here. It's very much like Artsonia, but only focuses on creating one art project. It's a great fundraiser for the school and the orders usually come in around the holidays so they can make for fun gifts. All of these projects were one…

an art project with sunflowers painted on it

The 2nd Grade students studied the artist Vincent Van Gogh and his artwork. We also read the book, Camille and the Sunflowers. The students were able to create a giant sunflower creating emphasis in their artwork. Then they were shown how to blend colors using oil pastels. The students had to choose a cool color for their background to make their sunflower "pop" in their piece of art.

a drawing of flowers in a vase with black and white checkered tablecloths

As we draw toward the end of the school year (okay, I know I'm early BUT in "art teacher years" a couple of months means time for just a handful of projects until the end!), I am thinking about ART.SHOW. Like, 24/7. And my art show isn't until MAY 15TH! I'm trying my hardest NOT to be my usual procrastinating self. So I've been pulling out grade level artwork and seeing what masterpieces we have to hang (we hang everything...if you search "art show" in that search bar on the right, you'll…

an art project made with colored paper and crayon on the bottom, which says love

For this lesson I began by talking to my 3rd graders about the Pop artist Robert Indiana. We talked about how he became famous for his really simple images that often included a short word. From there we talked about his 'LOVE' series and then looked at a variety of pieces he created. The first 'LOVE' piece came in 1964 when Indiana created the design for a Christmas card for the Museum of Modern Art. Then in 1973, the US Postal Service put the design on a stamp! Later on Indiana was even…

a drawing of a woman with dog and house in the background

Welcome back everyone! Tomorrow is my first day back, a day full of meetings. Lots of changes for me this year, I'm at 3 schools now, longer work day, less pay, and more meetings. Stay positive, stay positive, stay positive, right? Anyways, I need help: Anyone have any great ideas for the square one art fundraiser? I have to do it w/1st and 5th. Pictures would be great! :) thanks!

an orange, yellow and red tie - dyed piece of art on a black surface

4th Grade created these colorful artworks by using oil pastels and erasers! This lesson was inspired by The Art of Ed blog, and was a hit! Here's how we did it, but you can also check out the Art of Ed's blog for more details! They each chose a shape, traced around that shape, and colored them in with oil pastels. We like to use Crayola oil pastels the best! After they finished filling the paper up with color, they took the eraser, started in the middle, and drug the color outwards, creating…

a painting with a heart in the middle

My ALL TIME FAVORITE artist to teach is... PETER MAX! I love his painterly style... I am a painter myself, and just love his quick blendy brush strokes! I have been doing this lesson for over a decade... not every year, not exactly the same way, but it never gets old. I start the motivation for this lesson with two short video's I found on You Tube. Here they are... Each video is about 5 minutes long. Once the kids watch these, they can't wait to get brushes in their hands!!! Have fun…
